The U.S. poverty rate increased to 11.4% in 2020 from x.five% in 2019.   Prior to 2020, the poverty charge per unit had fallen each year for six years from fourteen.eight% in 2014.  The poverty rate of 10.5% in 2019 was the lowest recorded rate since the Census Bureau began reported the poverty level in 1959.

The Coronavirus Epidemic caused an economic shutdown through much of 2020.    Equally shown in the chart to the left, full time workers dropped from 2019 and part fourth dimension and not working adults increased.    This pb to the increase in the poverty level in 2020.

E'er since the poverty level has been tracked in the United States there has been a stubborn x% of the population in a poverty condition.   For farther analysis and discussion see Poverty and Spending over the Years.

Full U.S. poverty statistics are shown below:

The statistics below were generated from information reported by the U.S. Demography Bureau including the annual report on income and poverty released in September 2021 [i].  Overall, the total population of the U.Southward. was 325,7 one thousand thousand in 2020 and 37,2 1000000 Americans were in poverty.  Therefore, the overall Poverty Charge per unit for the year 2020 was 11.4%.  For more information on how poverty is defined and determined, see the Poverty Threshold Page.

U.S. Poverty Statistics – Age of the Population

The Poverty Rate for seniors was 9.0% which is lower than the population as a whole of 11.iv%.  This is due to the Social Security and Medicare Programs which have worked well at protecting seniors from poverty.  Seniors in a poverty status generally did not work ten or more years and pay enough taxes into the Social Security system to generate an acceptable retirement pension.

The kid Poverty Rate is 16.i%, therefore, about one in 6 children are in a poverty status.  This is a disturbing poverty statistic to many Americans because children are helpless to influence their living atmospheric condition.  Many of these children come from single parent families as shown below.

U.South. Poverty Statistics – Race

While the poverty rate for the population as a whole is 11.iv% the rate varies greatly past race.  Blacks have the highest poverty rate at 19.5% and Non-Hispanic whites the everyman at eight.2%.

The Poverty rate for Blacks and Hispanics is more double that of non-Hispanic Whites.

U.S. Poverty Statistics – Marital Condition

Overall 8.seven% of the families in America are in poverty. Families headed past a single female have a Poverty Rate of 23.five% – five times higher than married couple families.

At that place are 15.5 meg families headed by a single mother which stand for 19% of all families in America. But iii.6 meg of these unmarried mom families are in poverty which account for an astounding fifty% of all the families in poverty.  These statistics are the footing for the conclusion that marriage is 1 of the best defenses against poverty.

U.S. Poverty Statistics – Working Age Adults

Adults that work full time accept a depression Poverty Rate of 1.6%, which is not surprising.  The two.3 million full fourth dimension workers that are in poverty more often than not have depression paying jobs, such every bit a minimum wage job paying $xvi,000 per yr, and have 2 or more children thus pushing the family into poverty.

In that location are 45.3 meg adults between the ages of 18 and 64 (working age) that are non working. They total 23% of working age adults, only account for 63% of working age adults in poverty.

U.S. Poverty Statistics – Disability

14.six million working age adults have a disability which represents 7% of the work strength [ii].  They have a Poverty Rate of 25.0%.  While this is a high charge per unit of poverty information technology is less than the nonworking adult rate of 28.8% (Come across working age adults in a higher place).

U.S. Poverty Statistics – Residence

The Poverty Rate for those living in cities is slightly less than those living in rural areas.  Many Americans would approximate low-income Americans are disproportionately from metropolitan areas but that is not the case.

U.S. Poverty Statistics – Nativity and Citizenship

Foreign born not-citizens have a Poverty Rate of 17.8% – nearly twice every bit high as strange born naturalized citizens.

These citizens make upwardly 7% of the U.S. population but account for 11% of all Americans in poverty.

Foreign born naturalized citizens had a Poverty Charge per unit of 9.ii% which is slightly less than the population equally a whole of 11.4%.

U.South. Poverty Statistics – Educational Attainment

The educational level attained by individuals has a dramatic impact on poverty.  24.7% of adults over 25 years sometime without a high school diploma are in poverty versus iv.0% for those with a college degree.

Unemployment Rate Compared to Poverty Rate

The graph to the right shows the poverty level compared to the unemployment rate since 1964 [7].    Fifty-fifty in times of low unemployment the poverty level has never dropped below ten% of the population.    It appears equally though jobs and opportunity solitary exercise not explicate a stubborn ten% of the population in a poverty status.   This is in fact the example, as shown below in the reasons people in poverty are not working.

Analysis of Working Age Adults In Poverty

In 2020 there are 20.6 one thousand thousand working historic period adults (adults 18-64 years of age) in a poverty status.   63% did not piece of work in the year and another 29% spent worked office fourth dimension or spent at least part of the twelvemonth out of the workforce.   Only 8% of working age adults in poverty worked total time.   People working total time jobs who are in poverty have low paying jobs and a family size that puts them and their spouse and children in a poverty status.   For example a spouse working a $10.00 an 60 minutes full time task would earn approximately $20,800 in a typical work yr which is beneath the poverty threshold for a family of four of $26,496.   Individuals working part time or seasonal jobs too often don't make plenty to raise their income higher up the poverty threshold.

Why Those In Poverty Are Not Working

In that location are xi.3 million working historic period adults  in a poverty status in 2019 that did not work in the year.  The nautical chart to the left shows their reason for non working [iii].

  1. School.  Students are by and large immature and but getting started in life.   Information technology makes sense they would not have annual income greater than the poverty threshold and be labeled as being in poverty.   However, fifty-fifty though students are often in poverty they are on a rail to earn a living in future years that moves them out of poverty.
  2. Retired early.  Individuals who retire early on (below age 65) and are seeking no new income well-nigh probable have past earnings and pensions that are adequate for their lifestyle.   Poverty condition measures annual income only and does non take into account assets acquired in the past.
  3. Disabled or ill.   This is a broad class of individuals who have mental or concrete disabilities preventing them from working.   This category can include those who are not capable of earning a living by themselves, such as a downward syndrome adult.   The category also includes individuals that are prevented from working in their trade considering of a physical injury.   To return to the workforce these individuals require training or education in a dissimilar trade.
  4. Home or Family.   This is very broad category of poverty and includes a variety of reasons the individual is not a participant in the workforce.     It includes those taking care of a sick parent, those with express child intendance options, and those with habit, homelessness or other more extreme challenges.    This category of poverty is by and large not a problem of task availability simply of circumstances preventing the individual from working.
  5. Can't find work.   This represents 6% of the poverty population of working age adults not working and can be attributed on the job market place in the location where the individual lives.

Poverty Dynamics

The chart at the left shows the turnover charge per unit of poverty [iv].  27.v% of those in poverty in 2013 remained in poverty in 2016; 72.v% escaped poverty over the iii  year period.   About 26% had income over 200% of the poverty threshold in 2016 [five].  Therefore, many in a poverty status attain upward mobility and join the middle class.

Over  one-third of Blacks in poverty in 2013 were in poverty for the entire iv year reporting menses of 2013 – 2016.

The nautical chart to the correct shows the dynamics of families in poverty for the 4 year period of 2013  – 2116 [six].   29.one% of all married couple families in poverty in 2013 remained in poverty in 2016; the others escaped poverty past 2016.    About a third of all single mother families remained in poverty over the four year menstruation and about 2 thirds of these families escaped poverty in 2016.

Only 2% of the population is in poverty with three attributes

"Immature people can virtually assure that they and their families will avert poverty if they follow 3 elementary rules for success – complete at least a high schoolhouse education, work full time, and expect until age 21 and become married before having a baby.  Based on an analysis of Demography data, people who followed all three of these rules had but a 2 percent chance of being in poverty and a 72 percent hazard of joining the center class (defined as above $55,000 in 2010."
